What is the purpose of this program?
The ultimate purpose of this project is to upgrade apprentices and welders across Canada with the key intentions of addressing some of the challenges limiting the apprentice’s outcome, improving the quality of pressure welding trainings and most importantly, increase the supply of skilled pressure welders to fill the current skills gap and mismatch across the country.
What are some of the main benefits of the program?
  1. Opportunities for advancement – Upgrading welding skills to be a pressure welding and improving your employability.
  2. Meet you where you’re at – Tailored training provided by use of innovative approaches and best practices through our personalized learning model to get you additional certification to become a highly skilled welder.
  3. Daily hands-on training with highly qualified instructors.
  4. Earn up to 6 weld qualifications – Initial Pressure Welding Provincial Qualification; CWB four position qualification (CSA W47.1); Carbon 2” sch. 160-6G Stick or TIG; Stainless – TIG root, Stick (fill and cap) – 2” sch. 160-6G; Inconel – 2” sch. 160 TIG root, Stick fill and cap – 6G; 9 Chrome – 2” or 4” TIG all out 6G.
  5. Obtain industry required safety certifications
How is the program funded?
The Filling the Gap: Pressure Welder Training program is funded through the Employment and Social Development Canada – Union Training and Innovation Program (UTIP).
What does the online training look like?
The online training contains additional educational material such as videos, knowledge quizzes, information regarding jurisdictional qualification, etc. to better assist participants with the Pressure Welding Qualification training. Each participant will be provided their own LMS log-in information to access the materials at the beginning of the training course.
Where will the trainings take place?
The training sessions will take place at various locations across Canada. Please connect with your designated training coordinators in your region for more information on future trainings.
When will the next training sessions be hosted?
Please refer to the “Programs” page of this website or connect with your training coordinators in your region for more information.
What are the hours of the program?
The program is offered every day (Monday-Friday) for eight weeks (7-8 hours daily).
How long will this program be available for?
This program is being offered until March of 2026.
How will the testing be done?
The instructor will schedule welder tests throughout the program for each eligible participant.
Will participants receive a hard copy of the Initial Pressure Qualification handbook?
Yes, the Initial Qualification handbook will be available for all participants enrolled in the program.
Is the handbook provided mine to keep?
Yes.
Will participants be provided with a Red Seal CWB handbook?
No, participants will not require a Red Seal CWB handbook to successfully complete the training. However, if you do require the Red Seal CWB handbook, please connect with your instructor.
Will I be provided with a tablet and/or laptop to access the online portion of the program?
No, the content on the LMS will be accessible by use of personal laptop, tablet or smart phone.
Will I be provided PPE to keep?
No, any PPE provided for the duration of the program (helmets, gloves, safety glasses, etc.) will need to be returned to the designated training centre upon completion of this program. If you have your own PPE, you are highly encouraged to use your own. Further, you will not be provided with steel-toed work boots and you are responsible to use your own.
Can I drop the course and retake it again?
Exceptions are made for certain circumstances; each case will be reviewed individually.
What are the COVID-19 protocols?
Check in with your designated training centre to find out more about the Covid-19 protocols.
Do I have to pay for this training?
No, there is no cost to the participants for attending this eight-week training.
Is there any financial support being provided for attending this training?
Yes, eligible participants will be provided with living expense, dependent care, and travel financial support.
Do I have to pay to get my Industry Safety certification?
No, the cost of industry required safety certification, including Fall Protection, Confined Space, Quantitative Fit Testing and Audiometric Testing, is covered through this program for participants who do not currently have those certifications.
Do I have to pay for the tests?
All testing costs are covered during this 8-week training program

*Please note that re-certification costs after the completion of the program will not be covered under the Filling the Gap Program.
Will Living Expenses be covered for all participants enrolled in this program?
No, all participants will need to first apply to Employment Insurance for the duration of their 8-week training at Canada.ca. Participants will either receive Employment Insurance (EI) or they will receive the Living Expense funding through this program.
What if my claim is denied by the Employment Insurance?
If participants are unable to secure Employment Insurance, they will need to provide appropriate documentation indicating such, and only then will they be eligible for Living Expense assistance.
What if I do not want to collect EI until after the course?
To be eligible for the living allowance funding in this program. Individuals will need to provide proof they have applied for EI and have been declined.
Will dependent care be provided to participants who have children?
Participants must be able to provide proof that their children are attending pre-school or daycare for the duration of their training to be eligible for the dependent care assistance. This also applies to home daycare services and nanny’s.
How will the payment be paid and how often?

Will I receive tax receipts for financial assistance?
No, it is the responsibility of each participant to claim the amount of subsidy that they have received in their taxes.
What level of experience do I need to qualify?
If you are a welder or an apprentice and you are currently eligible to perform the Initial Pressure Test in your province, you are qualified to join the program.
What if I already have some of the listed qualification tickets/certifications listed?
If participants have already completed any of the listed qualifications above, they will still be eligible to take this training and gain other tickets/certifications listed.
What if I already have my Industry Safety certification?
If participants have already completed the safety training, they are required to provide the appropriate documents to indicate such upon registration of Filling the Gap Program to ensure the training is the recognized training accepted by the Boilermaker contractors.
Do I need to be able to pass all the qualifications listed?
No, upon completion of the training program, each participant must be able to successfully complete one or more of the weld qualifications listed below:
  • CWB four Position welding ticket- Flat, Overhead, Vertical & Horizontal
  • Initial Pressure Welding Test
  • Carbon 2” sch. 160-6G Stick or TIG
  • Stainless – TIG root, Stick (fill and cap) – 2” sch. 160-6G
